Note:
While navigating in Greek web sites your browser may have problems in displaying Greek characters. Then you should change the character settings of your browser:
In Netscape Navigator click on 'View' in the main menu bar, then go to 'Encoding' or 'Character Set' and select a Greek character set. In Microsoft Internet Explorer click on 'View' in the main menu bar, then go to 'Fonts' and select an appropriate character set.
If this doesn't work you maybe could find help at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.

Maps Top

First of all you may want to know where the island Crete is located. For a quick look, you can find maps here:

You will find Crete south of the Greek mainland. Maybe you have to scroll down the page to see it. Did you know that Crete is the most southern point of Europe? The most important cities are located on the northern coast of Crete. The capital, Iraklion (Heraklion), is located in the middle, Hania torwards the west and Rethymo in between the two.

Note:
There are lots of different spellings of Hania. You can find Canea, Chania, Khania, and maybe more. In Greek we write XANIA.

Traveling Connections Top

Hania and Iraklion both have their own airport. There are several flights a day from and to Athens by Olympic Airlines and Aegean airlines. In summer, many airlines provide weekly non-stop charter flights from central and northern Europe. Please contact your travel agency for further information.

You can reach Crete by ferry boat too. Here is a useful link:

Cooking Top

In general, Cretan cooking doesn't differ very much from the Greek cooking. If you have the opportunity you must try Pilafi (a sort of rice and meat). Actually it is the traditional Cretan wedding meal, but now and then they serve it elsewhere too.

Special tip: If you are looking for a good restaurant then you should look for restaurants where Greek people are eating and not only tourists. Usually you will find the better meal there.

If you like to try cooking Greek you can get recipes here:

Music Top

Like most countries, Greece is influenced by western popular music. However the traditional Greek music remains. The traditional folk songs of western Crete are called Rizitika. They are named after a region near the White Mountains called Rizes.

Archeology Top

Usually the European civilisation is considered to have its roots in the Greek-Roman epoch. However in Crete there has been an even older civilization, the so-called Minoan culture. A long time before the Greeks settled in Greece, the Minoans had already built cities and palaces in Crete.
  • If you are interested in archeology you MUST visit this web site: Ian Swindale, Rethimno. It is really excellent.
  • Some information about museums you can get here: University of Crete
